Bicycle Advocacy & Safety
These articles written by Fred Oswald, a bicycle commuter from Cleveland, Ohio and a League Cycling Instructor, certified by The League of American Bicyclists (LAB).
- Bicycle Commuter Issues
- Many people believe that cyclists risk being run down from behind by
automobiles. This is a dangerous superstition that causes them
to ride in ways that put themselves in greater risk (e.g, riding on the
wrong side of the road). This belief dominates public policy related to
cycling, and so increases risk for all. This article discusses the problems
caused by the policy and what can be done to remedy them.
- Bicycle Commuter's Guide
- This article tells how experienced cyclists follow the rules of the
road via a principle called Vehicular Cycling, which is summarized as
"Cyclists fare best when they act and are treated as operators
of vehicles."
